Insuring gadgets while travelling: the facts
Everyone likes to take their phones, tablets and other technology wherever they go. But they need to check their insurance cover first.
Posted on 18. October, 2014

Most people wish to take their smartphones, tablets and e-readers on holiday, but such gadgets are not necessarily covered by their existing travel or home insurance.

Our Fit-4-Travel insurance scheme provides up to £300 cover for any single item, and up to £3000 in total for all possessions. This is very much above average for a travel insurance - a fact that is well worth mentioning to your tech savvy clients.

That's because, as a recent investigation by the Daily Mail newspaper found, many travel insurance policies have a single item limit on technology. This will not even cover the replacement costs of most smartphones.

They may assume that their technology is covered by their home insurance when taken away. Not so. The small print is likely to reveal that cover for items taken out of the home is not automatically included on home insurance; often it is an optional extra, only added to the policy by increasing the premium.

It's also worth checking bank accounts, because a number of added value accounts now include travel and gadget cover.

Even our Fit-4-Travel policy may not offer enough cover for travellers carrying many gadgets.  In such cases we suggest you advise customers to go for specialist gadget insurance. But they must always check the policy in detail, because the Daily Mail article reported that "the excess on these policies can be high, typically around £100 for iPhones". Alternatively, they can ensure their items are covered on an "all risk basis" within their home content insurance policy.
